Hold up at the Ben Hall Festival

Forbes will wind back the clocks over 140 years when it stages the spectacular Ben Hall Festival over the long weekend in October 2009.

Forbes; the long time haunt and final resting place of Ben Hall, will turn back to the times of the bushranger from October 3 to 5; with the Ben Hall Festival set to celebrate the colourful history and folk traditions of the period.

The entertainment will get started on Saturday October 3 with themed displays and live entertainment in the many boutique and specialty shops which line the streets of Forbes’ historic town centre.

At noon Forbes’ historic town square precinct situated around the heritage-listed Victoria Park will be transformed for the main Festival event - The Outlaw Spectacular.  

This six hour free family event will provide fantastic live entertainment including renowned folk artists, bush poets, kids’ concerts, historical performers, blacksmith and woodturning displays, muzzle loading, and an incredible re-enactment of a mail coach robbery.

Festival-goers will be able to enjoy free performances by renowned guest artists Norma O’Hara Murphy, Chris and Merv ‘The Grey’ Webster, Gary Gough, Collector, The Lees, the Lachlan Living History Group, Inside the Square and more.

Plus there will be judging on the day of best dressed competitions with the public being encouraged to dress in 1860s theme to be in the running for cash prizes!

Saturday evening offers a great choice of entertainment options including an outdoor cinema at Spooners Oval featuring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman in Australia the movie. Tickets will be available at the gate or for pre-purchase from Forbes Shire Council (Adults $10, Kids $5 (5 – 16 years), Students & Pensioners $7). 

Alternatively head along to a theatre restaurant at the Forbes Sport & Recreation Club with live music by six-piece folk band Collector, a bushranger siege performance and a great traditional dinner. Tickets are $25 each and now on sale at the Club or phone (02) 6852 1499 to book. 

Or the team at Mezzanine Style are offering a great evening of entertainment including conversation with bushranger descendents, a short film, and live music from three former members of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle Band, together with young local talents Pink Slip. Tickets are $30 each and now on sale at Mezzanine Style or phone (02) 6851 4056 to book.

On Sunday recover with a bush breakfast featuring live entertainment at the Forbes Services Memorial Club, browse the town’s Make-Bake-Grow Markets at the Forbes Showgrounds and stay on to enjoy Golden Guitar winner Norma O’Hara Murphy in concert that evening.

With accommodation booking fast now is the time to encourage regional visitors to make arrangements so they can hold up in Forbes all weekend and experience all the other outstanding attractions that Forbes has on offer.
