Nominate for Forbes MedalLast modified: July 27, 2009 - 10:30 AM
Community members have just a few more days to nominate for the Forbes Medal; awarded annually in recognition of the conservation of heritage in Forbes at a prestigious awards presentation evening. This year’s Heritage Festival; to be conducted from May 1 to May 10, is themed “Our Place in Space under the Southern Cross”, a celebration of Forbes’ heritage from the culture of the traditional landowners; The Wiradjuri, through to life as it continues to unfold for all of us under our famous constellation. Forbes Heritage Festival Committee Chair Helen Herbert said “there are just a few days left to enter a nomination for the 2009 Forbes Medal which Forbes Shire Council will award to a conservation project undertaken within the last three years that contributes to the Heritage of Forbes. Projects which are eligible to nominate include new buildings and renovations, projects associated with the natural environment or educational or promotional projects such as music or visual arts. Mrs Herbert said “anyone can nominate a project as long as you have written permission if you are not the owner. Nomination forms for the 2009 Forbes Medal are available from Forbes Shire Council and must be completed and returned by Thursday April 2 to be eligible. The Forbes Medal will be awarded at an Awards Presentation Evening at Forbes Town Hall on Thursday May 7, with special guest speaker John Sarkissian; Operations Scientist at the CSIRO Parkes Radio Telescope. The evening will also include an exhibition of art, photography and writing by local primary and secondary school students and adult members of the community. The exhibited works will be the finalists in Heritage Festival Competitions, with entry into these competitions now open to any creative member of the public. This is a chance for anyone to celebrate Forbes Heritage in writing, on canvas, or through the lens of a camera. Cash prizes are on offer for all category winners from the youngest in our community who are eligible to enter the the infants school sections through to adults who can enter the open categories. “We are seeking art, writing and photography which interprets any aspect of our past or present heritage unfolding under the Southern Cross; from how the stars shaped the ideas and stories of Indigenous Australians, to the explorers who were guided by the stars to this place, or even the historic buildings that were the shooting locations for the movie ‘The Dish’,” said Mrs Herbert. Entry forms and conditions for the Art, Writing and Photography Heritage Competitions are available from Forbes Shire Council and must be completed and received at the Town Hall between 3pm and 5pm on Friday May 1. The Forbes Heritage Festival 2009 is sponsored by Country Energy and Forbes Shire Council, in conjunction with the National Trust of Australia (NSW). The Festival is coordinated and presented entirely by volunteers.
