Join volunteers for afternoon tea

Last modified: July 23, 2008 - 8:36 AM

To thank the local community for their ongoing support, the volunteers at the Forbes Railway Arts & Visitor Information Centre are inviting friends of the centre to a free afternoon tea on Saturday August 2.

The 60 working volunteers have provided assistance to tens of thousands of visitors to Forbes since the Centre opened in 1990.

Centre President Bev Parsons said “some of our volunteers have worked at the visitor information centre for almost 18 years, and we all appreciate the ongoing support we receive from the local community. Hosting this afternoon tea is our way of saying thanks.”

The volunteers operate the visitor centre 363 days a year and last year provided around 16,000 people with advice and assistance to make their visit to Forbes an enjoyable one.

Located in the impressive heritage Forbes Railway Station, the centre is a popular attraction for the local community, with residents often dropping in with visiting friends and relatives to pick up information on local and regional attractions, as well as to enjoy the great range of quality art works and handicrafts that are available.

Forbes Shire Council Mayor Rhonda Keane said “our residents benefit greatly from the services these volunteers offer, with Council’s support.”  “It is great that the service continues to grow and develop, with the addition of new attractions such as the recently opened Ben Hall room which offers exhibits and a DVD presentation on our town’s most infamous citizen,” she said.

The free afternoon tea is being conducted during Local Government Week (July 28 – August 3).

Mayor Keane said “this year during Local Government Week we are celebrating the theme Over the Fence: Cultivating our own Backyard which is all about what we can achieve when we come together as neighbours.”

“The dedicated team of community volunteers and Council work together to provide our neighbourhood with its visitor information centre, and it is a great initiative of the volunteers to invite friends and neighbours from the community to join them for afternoon tea.”

The afternoon tea is a free event, open to the public, and the volunteers would like to invite anyone in the community who is interested in attending to come along, and especially keen to welcome new residents.

The afternoon tea will commence at the Forbes Railway Arts & Visitor Information Centre on Union Street at 2:30pm on Saturday August 2.

Forbes Railway Arts & Visitor Information Centre is open daily from 9am – 5pm, except Christmas Day and Good Friday. New volunteers are always welcome.
