Applying for a position

This information will help you prepare your application for a position at Forbes Shire Council.

Selection is based on the assessment of each applicant in relation to the selection criteria identified in the position description for the advertised vacancy. The selection criteria consists of the qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully undertake the job.
Your application should include the following:-

  • Covering letter
  • Resume
  • Statements addressing the selection criteria. 

Provide complete and relevant information. Do not simply state that you meet the requirements of the selection criteria. Give examples, which demonstrate how you meet each criterion.

Your resume should provide details of your education, work history, special skills or qualifications, training details and referees, plus any other information which may support your application. Be clear and informative. Include the names, position titles, addresses and telephone numbers of at least two referees.

Privacy

Forbes Shire Council, as part of the recruitment process, will be collecting information about you. This information will be included in the recruitment file, and will be read by Council’s Records Staff, and members of the interviewing panel.

Job applications can be submitted by:

  • HAND DELIVERY to the Forbes Shire Council offices in Court Street, Forbes
  • EMAIL to forbes@forbes.nsw.gov.au

Please address all applications to the General Manager, Mrs Carissa Bywater and mark “Confidential - Position Name”.

It is important that your application arrives before the closing date, as selection committees are not obliged to accept late applications.
All applications will be acknowledged. Applicants will be advised of the result of their application following completion of the recruitment process.

Selection process

Forbes Shire Council is committed to providing a fair and equitable selection process. The stages of the selection process are:

  1. Short-listing. The selection panel (usually 3 members) will assess all applications against the selection criteria contained in the position description. The panel will then decide which applicants best meet the criteria and will call for interview.
  2. Interviewing. You will be given at least 3 days notice if you are required for an interview. The interview panel will consist of 3 members, one of which will be a HR representative, who will work together to recommend the most suitable person for the position.
  3. Reference checks and other checks. Referee checks will be carried out on the recommended applicant/s. Positions that have been identified as child-related, will be required to undergo a criminal history check and complete a Prohibited Employment Declaration.
  4. Medical assessment. The recommended applicant will be required to undergo a pre-employment functional assessment at Council’s expense.
  5. Notification of result. The successful applicant will be verbally notified as soon as possible after the interview and will receive a written letter of offer in the post. Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by mail once the offer of employment has been accepted.
